Encouraging cycle use, enjoying bike rides

More kids on bikes please

Posted by volresource on 7 March, 2008

Perhaps we should ask Madeleine Sumner, MHDC transport officer, about this at the next Cycle Malvern meeting on Monday:

From Bike Radar “Sustainable transport charity Sustrans is providing free training for teachers, parents and other school representatives at events being held in England and Scotland today (6th March) to help boost healthy school travel.”

Not in Malvern this time round, but how about later in the year?

We would like to take our children on bike rides around Malvern area that is fairly flat eg dismantled railway would be suitable. The OS Map details the dismantled railway from Malvern Wells to Upton but there appears to be no public use of it. Do you have any ideas where might be suitable. At the moment we resort to heading to the Forest of Dean - great shame. There must be some places near by!
    Many thanks

Sorry that I haven’t replied sooner, but I was struggling to think of a helpful answer.

There’s one pretty flat path on the Hills more or less next to Jubilee Drive, but this is one of the few which is supposedly no-go for cyclists (but actually the only one where I’ve seen a real family cycling group). It’s fairly narrow for much of the length so I can see why walkers have right of way.

And we are likely to have one to two proper off-road cycle paths locally, such as a Sustrans route to Worcester, in a few years. Not much use right now though!

I do have a few fairly easy, fairly flat, on-road routes from 12 to 18 miles mapped out (and ridden by one group or another) which might be suitable, depending on the age of the children.

If you are looking for a short flat off road path then a very short path is at the top of peachfield Common, by the wells road. Its very short, but is flat and quite quiet.

If u want something slightly more off road, longer and you dont mind going up and down a bit then the ridge that runs between the whyche cutting and blackmore car park on jubille drive is quite quiet. Also there are some great views.

I’ll make a map and put it here,http://malvernredriders.wordpress.com/map-page/
