Active Travel In official speak (e.g. in LAAs), health-enhancing physical activity (such as walking and cycling) as a means of transport in the daily routine, including the journey to work or school. From SECO glossary.

AONB Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, an official landscape designation. See Malvern Hills AONB.

ASL Advanced Stop Line.

BOAT Byway Open to All Traffic.

BUG Bicycle Users Group, typically work place based.

CROW Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 OR see More page for Dutch body providing info on traffic engineering etc.

DfT Department for Transport, central government’s latest place for cycling issues. (Was at one stage DETR, with environment and regions, and was known as DTp in the ‘old days’.) See More page for policy links.

LAA Local Area Agreement. LAAs “are made between central and local government in a local area. Their aim is to achieve local solutions that meet local needs, while also contributing to national priorities and the achievement of standards set by central government.” From I&DEA.

LAF Local Access Forum. Gives advice to county council on the improvement of public access to land for open-air recreation (connected with RoWIP). Worcestershire LAF; Herefordshire LAF.

LSP Local Strategic Partnership, a body led by local government but including other public agencies and some business and voluntary sector too, deciding priorities for an area.

MHDC Malvern Hills District Council.

MTB Mountain bike.

NCN National Cycle Network, developed by Sustrans.

Off-road This can have different meaning depending on context. Off-road cyclists (aka mountain bikers) will see it as using tracks which have little or no surface treatment. For Sustrans or council designed cycle paths/routes, off-road means away from (or separated from) a road carrying motor vehicle, and should usually have a reasonable cycling surface.

RoWIP Rights of Way Improvement Programme.

Sheffield rack A type of cycle stand made of tubing like an upside down elongated U. There are now a number of variations on the classic which originated in the Yorkshire city.

STP School Travel Plan.

Sustainable Travel From S Worcs JCS: alternative environmentally friendly transport options, e.g. car share, walking, cycling, public transport, with the aim of reducing the daily trips made by private vehicles and overall levels of CO2 omissions.
