Cycle Malvern

Encouraging cycle use, enjoying bike rides

Projects

Issues which have been identified by Cycle Malvern group. Just a list at present, not indicating any particular status.

Cycle Routes

For more details on the whereabouts of the routes being planned please see the Routes page.

Outside Malvern

  • Malvern to Worcester
    • Important issue.
    • Could be alongside A449 or separate route.
    • The section of Sustrans/NCN route 46 covering this is in planning and negotiation. Further news hoped for soon (spring 08?).
    • NCN 46 will connect with Diglis Lock bridge, funded as part of Sustrans Connect2 to open up various options into and across Worcester.

Around Malvern

  • Science Park/The Chase
    • Part of Science Park expansion agreement (section 106)
    • Delayed from 07/08 financial year to 08/09.
    • Mainly cycle logos. Limited ability to tackle issues at key junctions. Signals at Barnards Green Road/Geraldine Road as part of another development.
    • Route under further review, following consultation Sept 07. See pdf copy of consultation plan (315kb).
    • Article in Gazette, July 2003, says Science Park has set target of half of its staff (not other businesses on the science park presumably) cycling to work regularly by 2009.
  • School routes, connecting with school travel plans.
  • Other town route possibilities, e.g. connecting the Link to town centre, Malvern Common to Malvern Wells.

Cycle Parking

  • See Audit info on Resources page.
  • Town centre. County council is interested in providing parking in Belle Vue Terrace and Church Street area, but the budget is limited.
  • Audit has identified that there is a lack of cycle parking in Barnards Green. Hopefully the county council will also consider this.
  • National CTC campaign in 2008 (may be localised)?
  • Promote what is already available.

WCC cycle pages say (at Nov 07, last revised May 07): Worcestershire County Council is currently providing grants in the form of free Sheffield cycle stands to employers, businesses and schools who are interested in promoting cycling to their premises for employees, customers, clients etc. Companies successful in obtaining stands agree to the installation, maintenance and monitoring of usage.

Sustrans guide to cycle parking (pdf, 792kb).

Potholes

Reporting, monitoring action. And other road maintenance – e.g. missing white lines.

Other ideas for Cycle Malvern

Connecting with other cycle groups in Worcestershire and Herefordshire (e.g. South Worcs Cycle Group).

Making carriage of bikes on trains and buses easier (need to connect with wider campaign).

Promotion of cycling, encouraging change in attitudes (public, officials). Publicity of existing options including maps and guides, ‘try cycling’ events, Bike Week.

Overall cycling safety (including road user education?).

Adult cycle training, for those new or returning, to increase confidence and skill (‘cyclecraft’).

Basic maintenance sessions/Dr Bike – encouraging getting the bike out of the shed and checking roadworthiness. (Connect with Back on Track for advanced sessions?)

Twenty is plenty (lowering speed limits for residential areas).

Employer travel plans – check out progress. Input into School Travel Plans where possible.

How about changing the Townsend road cycle track so that it gives priority and junctions to the cyclist. At present it is an accident waiting to happen.
