Encouraging cycle use, enjoying bike rides

Hills cycling features in tourism promo

Posted by volresource on 5 February, 2008

Do the Conservators know about this? From Marketing Week website, 4th Feb:

“Enjoy England has launched a campaign, featuring veteran British actor Michael Gambon, aimed at boosting tourism through word-of-mouth recommendations.

“The ads are designed to drive traffic to the tourism body’s online forum where visitors are encouraged to share their experiences of English holidays and attractions.

……..

“Among the experiences featured in the ads are cycling in the Malvern Hills, eating cockles in Leigh-on-Sea and relaxing on the Norfolk Broads. “

The Malvern Hills Conservators tolerate rather than encourage cycling, and probably think there is already enough activity on the Hills.

For more info on cycling in the Malverns, especially using the quiet lanes and appreciating the varied countryside, see MalvernTrail.

Comments very welcome from anyone who has seen or heard the ads (which “will run on radio and television until next month”).

UPDATE: Here’s a link to the press release, which refers to  “biking the muddy Malvern Hills”. Hmm.

Attracting the cycle tourist

Posted by volresource on 9 January, 2008

I might just have mentioned in a previous post my background with the London Cycling Campaign. So no apologies in plugging some success for their London Landmarks campaign, which encourages London’s tourist attractions to install cycle parking and provide information for those who may wish to visit their sites by bike.

Having surveyed cycle provision at our tourist attractions, perhaps Cycle Malvern should follow in their footsteps? Of the Priory, Three Counties Showground and the Hills, only the latter has any racks, not always in the most obvious or useful places. But its only my MalvernTrail website which provides any information.

UPDATE: detailed info from cycle racks audit can be found on Resources page here.
